“The Polish soldier fights for the freedom of other nations but dies only for Poland”

Szanowny panie Ministrze, Szanowny panie Burmistrzu! Szanowny panie Generale! Szanowni Panstwo! To dla mne zaszczyt przemawiac dzisiaj!

The shared past of Poland and The Netherlands connects our countries, especially today. It is an honor and a privilege to be here on September 23rd, the Day of the Paratroopers, as Polish paratroopers played such an outstanding role in helping to liberate occupied Netherlands in 1944/5.

We are gathered here to honor a Polish war hero, who enjoys a high esteem in my country. His name: General Sosabowski. General Stanisław Sosabowski and his paratroopers, more than 1000 Polish soldiers, took part in the Operation Market Garden in September 1944. Exactly 73 years ago. In that time the circumstances in and around Arnhem were terrible and more than 100 Polish liberators were killed in action in just a few days.

After the war, many veterans returned to The Netherlands, especially to the village of Driel not far from Arnhem, for commemoration ceremonies.

Not only Polish paratroopers, also Polish soldiers of the First Armored Division fought against the Nazi’s on Dutch soil. We are standing right now 50 meters from the monument of the First Armored Division of General Maczek, a man who has played a key role in the liberation of Breda and the south of The Netherlands and to whom we remain endlessly grateful. We expect again a visit of Maczek veterans to Breda the end of October.

General Sosabowski and his paratroopers have gained a special place in the hearts of the Dutch people.

Eleven years ago, in 2006, Queen Beatrix awarded the highest Dutch military decorations to the First Independent Paratroopers Brigade and posthumously to General Sosabowski. I was not there myself, but I have seen the moving footage of this impressive gathering.

The awards in 2006 were a recognition of the Parachute Brigade and General Sosabowski. Queen Wilhelmina already stressed shortly after the war the importance to honor the Polish paratroopers. Cora Baltussen and the people in Driel all these years kept the memory of the liberators alive and overcame numerous political and bureaucratic obstacles.

War heroes have always appealed to the imagination of people. The story of General Sosabowski moved the Dutch artist Martin Abspoel so much, that he decided at his ouwn initiative to design this bust. The Dutch Embassy in Warsaw learned about his initiative and decided – and I am quoting mr. Abspoel – ‘to bring the general home’.

I am very happy the artist is here with us and I am as Chargé d’Affaires honored to be able to unveil this bust on this beautiful spot in Warsaw-Żoliborz, just 400 meters from the villa where General Sosabowski used to live before the war.

I would like to thank mr. Abspoel for taking this initiative and making this impressive bust and the Mayor of Żoliborz, mr. Krzysztof Bugla for making this event possible.

Thank you very much!
