Aankondiging: White lanyards – worn with pride

Due to the success of the Booklet series regarding the 1st Airlanding Anti-tank Battery and their heroic actions at Arnhem, the Author has now completed the entire history of the unit, from its inception in 1938 to its final decommission in 1946. For many years the Author Nigel Simpson held numerous accounts of the men that made up this unit and in fact fought with it during the French Campaign 1940 and remained with it during its first engagements as an Airborne Unit on Sicily and then Italy 1943. Again, from actual first-hand accounts, the actions have been placed within the context of what is known, and in many instance the ultimate sacrifice of a large number of men is recorded. With the release of the initial booklets, a further amount of information was contributed to the Author and this has now been incorporated into this new book.
Included is a foreword written by Sergeants Edgar Toseland and Herbie Atkinson of the Battery in 2002, and letters from Ian Toler and John Frost.
The book lays out in depth the French Campaign of 1940, followed by the Battery’s evacuation from Dunkirk and preparations for the intended Nazi Invasion. It was then converted to an Airborne role and proceeded to North Africa. Here personal accounts are incorporated throughout to show that these were ordinary young men who should have been enjoying life. These accounts are then used to cover the actions on Sicily and the taking of the Primosole Bridge, and then Italy in 1943, where numerous men of the Battery again gave the ultimate sacrifice.
The Battery then returned home in January 1944 and was rebuilt ready for the invasion of Europe, finally taking part at Arnhem in September 1944. With this section of the book, a large number of new photo’s along with further in-depth accounts have been incorporated and minor adjustments made with confirmation from more first-hand sources. The book concludes with the Battery actions in Norway in May 1945 and includes a large number of photos never published before, and then finally the Battery reunions that occurred from 1975 with again photos never published.
In all, this A4 size hard cover book weighs 2,4 kg! and contains over 500-pages and is crammed with personal accounts, background information, along with corroborative information, and over 250 personal photographs, maps and documents of the men, and over 380 archive photographs and maps associated with the Battery and events they were involved in. The Authors hope that this book provides a lasting tribute to all the men who made up the 1st Airlanding Anti-tank Battery.
