“Het komt niet vaak voor dat er een boek verschijnt over de opleiding van een zweefvlieger in het US Army Air Corps. We zijn dan ook blij dat we van een van hen, Charles Skidmore, ‘zijn ‘ verhaal gekregen hebben met het verzoek om daar een boek over te schrijven. Wat ons opvalt is dat de rekruten tijdens hun opleiding van hot naar haar gestuurd werden in de States voordat ze scheep gingen naar Engeland. Ook daar ging de vervolgopleiding niet van een leien dakje. Uiteindelijk beschrijft de auteur hoe hij op D-Day zijn eerste vlucht maakte naar Sainte Mère Église en hoe het er op het landingsterrein aan toe ging. Na het afleveren van de lading bleef het zweefvliegtuig achter, maar gingen de vliegers weer terug naar Engeland voor de volgende sortie. Uiteindelijk zal de vlieger nog een vlucht maken tijdens Operatie Market Garden, naar Groesbeek, met een zweefvliegtuig waarin een aanhanger vol met mijnen is vastgesjord”

“It’s not often that a book is published about the training of a glider pilot in the US Army Air Corps. We are therefore glad that one of them, Charles Skidmore, gave us ‘his’ story with the request to write a book about it. What strikes us is that during their training, the recruits were sent from here to her in the States before they were shipped to England. The further education did not go smoothly there either. Finally, the author describes how he made his first flight to Sainte Mère Église on D-Day and what it was like on the landing area. After the delivery of the cargo, the glider remained behind, but the pilots returned to England for the next sortie. Ultimately, the pilot will make another flight during Operation Market Garden, to Groesbeek, with a glider in which a trailer full of mines is lashed.”
